The
Shki Mawtch Taw-win En-mook Curriculum Project was initiated to provide
Teachers and Students with relevant Units of Study, focused on and
including, teachings from the Anishnaabe and Aboriginal Peoples of this
land. The initial Writing Team outlined several themes and concepts as
the foundation for this inclusive curriculum. The themes, selected by
the Elders, are based on traditional educational principles of learning
and the progression of knowledge and teaching. Elements of Anishnaabe
teaching and learning are essential within this Project.
The principle of establishing relationships – among the students,
between the student and the teacher(s), between the student and the
knowledge, and between students and the world around them
(Giidaakiminaan) are important aspects of the Anishnaabe education
process.
Providing the opportunity for all students to be responsible for
their own learning, and making choices based on the teachings of the
Seven Grandfathers, are also essential elements of the Shki Mawtch
Taw-win En-mook Curriculum.
The original writing team conceived of 72 units, covering all divisions and grades.
In 2006, the project produced 12 units of study. These units have
been piloted in schools for their applicability. These units are
currently having final revisions made. These units will be available for
distribution in the fall 2007.
In the fall of 2006 and the winter of 2007, 12 units of study
were written. These new units are currently under going editing and will
be piloted in schools in the fall of 2007. It is anticipated
that these units will be available for distrubution by early 2008.
The Shki Mawtch Taw-win En-mook Project
Team will continue to produce additional units which will also be
piloted and made available throughout the coming years.
